Rector's Reflection: Four Songs
Dear Friends,
I was thinking about you as I walked from the rectory to the church this morning.
It took me four songs to get to the center of town.
No judgement, OK? The songs were "Fight Song" by Rachel Platten, "One" by U2, "The Gift of Love" composed by Hal Hopson, and, um, "Frozen Heart"....from Frozen. I did not choose these songs, iTunes shuffled them to me.
That said, "Fight Song" is a great way to start the day. It's an I-got-this kind of song. But by the end of it, I was thinking about all the fights you all/we all are are fighting right now; from grief and depression to racism and injustice; from getting our kids what they need, to getting ourselves what we need; from the pain of the Nipmuc internment on Deer island that we would normally memorialize as a church on this weekend, to the marathon that will be held on Monday and all the things that brings up for our community. Our "small boats in an ocean" sure feel small in the face of it all.
But then Bono started singing "One".... it's a song that makes me cry so I almost asked my phone to skip it. But honestly, how do we fight the battles without the wisdom of Bono? It felt serendipitous enough to risk crying on my commute.
One Love,
One Blood
One Life, you got to do what you should
One life, with each other
Sisters, brothers
One life, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One
One
